The Meaning Of The Thanksgiving Holiday For The Family

By on September 9, 2011

The Meaning Of The Thanksgiving Holiday For The FamilyThe Thanksgiving holiday is one of the major holidays in the United States. It is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of the month of November each year. This became a yearly celebration across the nation in 1863 after it was proclaimed as a federal holiday by President Abraham Lincoln. The Thanksgiving holiday has been celebrated many years before President Lincoln declared it to be a day of celebration throughout the United States.

The Significance Of The First Thanksgiving Celebration

The first Thanksgiving celebration was celebrated by the Pilgrims to thank the Native Americans for helping them pull through their very first and extremely cold winter in New England. A lot of Pilgrims died during that cold winter but quite a number of them managed to survive. All of them would have perished during those cold winter months without the aid of the Native Americans and for that they were very thankful and wished to express it through a celebration and a feast. History books say that the first Thanksgiving celebration had duration of 3 days and the feast that was prepared had enough food to feed more than 100 Native Americans and Pilgrims.

A Time For Family Bonding

Nowadays, the Thanksgiving holiday has been given a new meaning. It is no longer celebrated to mark the family’s survival through the winter. The Thanksgiving holiday is now a time for families and friends to gather and be thankful for their loved ones and the fruitful year. This holiday has created the perfect opportunity for families to bond while watching a football game on television or enjoying a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner.

Family members, who work and live in other cities, come home for the Thanksgiving holiday to celebrate the occasion with the entire family and just enjoy their togetherness. The Thanksgiving holiday is not a celebration if it is not celebrated with family and friends. This kind of family tradition instils the importance of family to the young children.

A Time To Rest And Be Together As A Family

When most of the family members have very busy lives whether in school or at work, it is almost impossible for them to sit down and have a meal together. What is great about the Thanksgiving holiday is that it creates an opportunity for the family to sit down and have a meal together as a family. The family members can bond while preparing the food and have a great meal as a family. They can catch up with each others lives and just enjoy each other’s company.

A Time To Be Thankful

In the midst of all the activities and preparations during the Thanksgiving holiday, it is also important to not forget that this holiday is also a time to be thankful for all of life’s blessings. It is a time for each family member to look back and think of all the things that he has to be thankful for in his life. They can be thankful for a great job, a new house, a new car, new opportunities and of course the love of their family and friends. This teaches the young children to be constantly thankful for everything. In every household, a Thanksgiving holiday dinner always starts off by saying a prayer of thanks for all of God’s blessings.
