Party Food For Kids Parties
Planning a party is always a lot of hard work and when it comes to planning a party for the tiny tots, you know that you have so much more thinking on your hands. With kids you need to take care of the kind of theme you will be choosing, what kind of games and activities you want to keep and most importantly, what kind of food you will be serving. After all, each party, whether it is for kids or for elders, is mostly remembered for the food that is served!
Food Ideas For Kids Parties
Menu Mayhem!
Deciding the menu for a kiddie party would probably take up the most time, because with kids, you need to be careful. You have to think about the likes and dislikes of all kids, and that is actually impossible; which is why, you need to pick out things that most kids will like and enjoy. This means that you will have to have more than just two or three things on the menu, because variety is what will keep the kids happy. And happy kids, means a successful party!
Crazy For Cake
If it is a birthday that you are getting ready to celebrate, then the most important item on the menu would be the cake! And these days, you can actually go crazy and really inventive with the cakes, because there are so many choices on offer. Depending on how much you want to spend, and how crazy you are willing to go with the cake, you will be spoilt for choice. Whether you want to have a simple and traditional cake, with icing, or something a little fancier, like a doll or dragon on it, you can take your pick.
If you are baking a cake at home, you can pick up some classic shapes like round, square or even star. Your kids will love to have a cake that is in correspondence with the number that they are turning that particular day. And it is not all that difficult to make a cake in the shape of ten or eight! For the nature lover in your kid and her friends, try cakes in the shapes of ladybugs or butterflies. The sun and the sunflower should also be easy enough to prepare at home.
But if you are planning to go all out, then you can choose from cakes that look like sandcastles, trains, cauldrons with steam coming out of them, teddy bears and pirate ships. However, if you want to keep it simple yet supremely interesting, choose cupcakes or ice cream cakes, because both are known never ever to fail!
For The Sweet Tooth
No party can be complete without those wonderful sweet treats, and if you think that just a bowl of chocolates or candies will do the trick for you, well you couldn’t be further from the truth! Just because they are kids, does not mean that you can fool them that easily. You will need quite the array for sweet treats to impress your little guests. However, it would be intelligent to keep it simple and fun, because even though the kids will want variety, they are not exactly food critics, and you don’t really have to put up restaurant quality food.
Try offering them breadsticks that have been dipped in chocolate syrup, and then covered in sprinkles. Another great idea to get them to eat something healthy, would be to make some fruit kebabs. Slightly roast fruit cubes and stick them on a sewer, and then put these skewers on the plate along with a chocolate or caramel dipping sauce. You can also play with other fruits, like melon balls or strawberries dipped in chocolate.
Sticking on with the fruit theme, how about mini cupcakes with orange and lemon in them or brownie like squares with coconut or blackberry or blueberry. Most fruits go great in tarts, which is why you could think on the lines of strawberry tarts, lemon tarts, tarts with jelly inside them.
Similarly, a great idea is to set jellies with bits of fruits inside them in clear plastic glasses. Kids are sure to love them! And then of course there are the all times favourites like brownies, jam biscuits, gingerbread men, cupcakes in all flavours and colors, all of which are hits with kids, no matter what their age!
Spice It Up!
Just having a great cake and lots of sweet treats is not going to be enough, because there might be some kids who will enjoy those slightly spicy, truly savoury items, a lot more. This is why, you need to maintain the variety. And all said and done, you can’t have an overdose of sweets, when it comes to kids. If you are thinking what savoury tid-bits to entice the kids, with, then you will have a lot to choose from.
There are great ways to get kids to eat veggies; all you need to do is think a little creatively. Turn thick potato slices into pizza bases, which you can top with cheese or mushroom and bake to turn into mini potato pizzas. Put roasted vegetables on a skewer and all the kids will feel very grown up. Instead of regular potato chips, choose parsnip or sweet potato, and you will have a much healthier option. If you want to give your party an exotic twist, offer the kids fried rice, with loads of finely chopped veggies, chicken and egg.
If you want to try out some interesting food ideas, how about preparing some interesting pizzas, with toppings filled with nutrition? Choose from finally chopped peppers, mushrooms, spinach or even broccoli, cover with cheese and kids are sure to devour it all. Cut out cute shapes with cheese or offer the kids a taste of China with chicken, or shrimp or vegetable dumplings.
You could even prepare miniature versions of toad in a pot. And then of course, there are the forever favourites with the kids like sausage rolls, cheeseburger along with chips, chicken nuggets and garlic bread, topped with cheese.

Do It Yourself!
Kids are sure to have lots of fun and also make a big mess, if you choose to have a ‘do it yourself’ style party. However, this is a great way to get the kids involved and let them have things that they will enjoy. A little bit of preparation will be required, because you will need to get all the ingredients ready beforehand. Along with that, you will also have to make sure that you have lots of patience, and a constant supply of paper towels and wet wipes!
Set up a slider bar, where there are plenty of burger buns, small burger patties, and toppings galore, including lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese, ketchup and even pickle. Tacos also make for great do it yourself meals, wherein all you need to do is have toasted tortillas ready, and make sure the kids have loads of choices. You could have beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, beef, chicken, corn chips, cooked corn, guacamole and salsa. The kids will take care of the rest!
Hot dogs are perhaps the easiest ‘do it yourself’ foods for kiddie parties, because you just need hot dog buns, hot dogs, mustard and some ketchup. Sandwiches are also easy enough to make and offer, perhaps the greatest amount of choice.
Not only can you choose from a variety of breads, the range of toppings can also be extensive. Let the kids take their pick from turkey, ham, peanut butter, jelly, mild cheddar, tuna-mayo mix, cheese, cucumber, tomatoes, mayonnaise, crisps and ketchup cream cheese.
However, it will be ‘do it yourself’ pizzas that will grab most attention at any kiddie party. If you have a wood fire oven or grill that you can set up in your backyard, you are in for a great time, along with the kids. Buy some pre-made bases and sauce and get a whole lot of toppings such as sweet corn, lettuce, pineapple, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, peppers, bacon, anchovies and most importantly mozzarella. Let each kid prepare his or her own pizza and you can bake it for them!
No matter how many things you offer the kids to eat, they are bound to feel thirsty, which is why you will also have to think on the lines of what kind of drinks you want to serve at the party. While water is a must, you might want to keep some fruit juices and flavoured milks.
Try thinking on the lines of lemonade, watermelon juice, orange juice and milkshakes. However, if you want to go all out, try making some kid friendly cocktails – not only will the kids feel all grown up, but it is also a great way to get kids to drink juices that they might not drink otherwise.
If the kids coming to the party are really young, in all probability their parents or some elders will accompany them. And it is important that you think about them as well. Try having some foods and drinks that they will enjoy.
While the adults can have the same food that the kids are having, you might want to make some arrangements for coffee, tea and some adult biscuits or crisps. A kiddie party can be great fun, especially if you spend a little time thinking and planning out the event. Food need not take centre stage, but let it shine on its own!
