From the time you find out that you are pregnant, you start weaving these wonderful dreams about how lovely your life will be, with the new angel. You have these dreams where you are playing with your child, and he or she is smiling up at you, gurgling and cooing, and before you know it, all of it starts coming true. Before you know it, you are holding your baby in your arms, and she is growing a little every day!

And then suddenly, one day, you realise that in no time, it will be her first birthday! Now this is a special day, mainly for the parents, because the guest of honour will probably not even know what is happening around her, and quite definitely not remember much of it either. However, despite all this, it is an important day and needs to be celebrated with all the fanfare!

Now, planning a first birthday party is not like planning any other birthday party, because this one will always be special. This one needs a lot of thought and care to be put into it, which is why you will need all the tips and tricks you can lay your hands on. There are going to be so many things that you will have to get your head around.

Food and the cake will seem secondary, when you have to think about things like the where you want to have the party, what kind of invitations you would want, what kind of theme you would keep and then getting your hands on the decorations that go with the theme. You will have to think if you want a costume party or just a simple one, but no matter what kind of theme you choose, you will have to keep some games and activities that keep the guests entertained.

The Planning Process

Any good party, especially a first birthday party, starts with the proper planning, because if you know what all needs to be done, you will be able to manage your time, resources and finances in a good manner. Break down the planning into categories and you will have a more systematic approach to the planning.

The Where!

One of the most important aspects of any party is the venue. Where you have the party is just as important as how good the remaining aspects are. Choose a place that will be comfortable for you as well as your guests. Also remember that this is a place where your baby should be comfortable. So, the best place for your baby’s first birthday party would be your own home! You might want to choose the room that is the largest and the easiest to clear out, so that you have sufficient space. If you are lucky enough to have a lawn or terrace, you could plan your party there too.

So Many Themes to Choose From!

What would a birthday party be, without a theme? Agreed that the star of the day, your baby, will have no real memories associated with the theme or the party, but you need to have one, so that the other will! However, something that is sure to capture even the little one’s attention would be bright colors, which is why it would be a good idea to choose a theme where you can use vibrant colors.

Choose a rainbow theme, where you can have the seven colors of the rainbow as your décor, balloons in those colors, a cake that has the rainbow on it and you could give away gifts which are paints and color pencils that correspond to the rainbow. Or you could have a nursery rhyme based party, where the décor is from Old MacDonald with hay stacks all around and the cake is inspired by Incy Wincy Spider! You could even hire a petting zoo, which will give the kids a chance to mingle with the animal world.

Another great theme would be wild wild west, where you can dress your kid up as a cowboy or cowgirl, wrangle in a few ponies for the kids to ride and have a cake that looks like a horse! Storybooks that you read to your baby could also prove to be a great source of inspiration.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Horton Hears a Who would prove to be great hits, if you can find cakes that look like caterpillars or a cute elephant. Or how about a party that is all about the number one? Have a cake that is shaped like the number, and have decorations that are all either the Roman numeral one or the written number one.

Just For the Little Princess

Girls will always always love pink, no matter what their age, which is why it would be a great idea to have a party which is all pink. Have a cake with pink frosting, give away pink colored favours, like pink pencils or even pink cupcakes. Ask all the guests to come dressed in pink and make sure that your princess is also dressed in pink!

Princesses are galore in the world of Disney and you can choose your favourite or the one your little angel loves the most. Choose from Ariel, Beauty, Rapunzel or Snow White and weave your fairy tale first birthday party around that story. For Ariel, you could have a underwater kind of theme, with Flounder or Sebastian on the cake. Have stringers make of seashells for the décor and give away party favors that include coloring books with pictures of the beach.

It would be a great idea to base your party idea on Barbie or Dora the Explorer, because most little girls are really fond of the two. Even if your own little princess might not remember or enjoy the same, the other little girls who come to the party, will certainly have a blast!

Cute little bugs, flowers and butterflies will also make for great themes. You could have cakes that are shaped as any of the above; give out cute hats that have bugs or butterflies painted on them or even give the little angels, wings, just like a butterfly!

Or how about a theme that is inspired by the world of television? Think on the lines of Hannah Montana, Hello Kitty or Winnie the Pooh! It would be easy to get your hands on Hannah Montana DVDs, which you could give away as gifts, or Winnie the Pooh soft toys or Hello Kitty bags and pouches.

All For the Young Prince

You really can’t go all pink and girly if you have a boy; for him, you need something macho! Cute macho! So how about any army theme? Dress up your kid in camouflages and have a décor that is all green and brown. Create an ambience that reminds the guests of the trenches or an army boot camp.

Superheroes will always be in demand and the eternal favourites will be Batman, Spiderman and Superman. It is easy enough to get merchandise related to these and finding a cake that looks like either of them should not prove difficult. You could even opt for one of the contemporary heroes like Ben10 or the Transformers.

There are plenty of inspirations from the telly world for the boys as well, and quite certainly, your little boy and his friends will love a theme that takes flight from Thomas the Train or Bob the Builder. While the cake should be easy enough, you can give away trains or construction sets as party favours. See if you can arrange for a little train to go all around the room, because that will definitely keep the little ones entertained.

Or why not take the little ones off for a jungle safari? Choose from jungle animals or dinosaurs, because both prove to be great themes. Have animals cut outs all over the place and give away animal masks to the kids. Go one step further and choose another kind of animal based theme, from movies like Kung Fu Panda or Madagascar.

Cartoon characters will always be loved and you will be spoilt for choice – Shrek, Tom & Jerry, Noddy, Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear, the list is truly endless! Even pirates, clowns and the circus will prove to be great themes, because these will be the easiest to arrange.

Sparkly And Bright All Around!

Once you have decided a theme, the decorations pretty much fall into place on their own. However, if you have decided to go with no theme, then you can just choose to brighten up your party area with lots of bright colors, balloons, sparkly stringers and lots of little things that would certainly catch the attention of the little ones. You could always have a lot of your baby’s photos around or even toys that he or she loves.

However, make sure that you clear the area up for the party, so that there are no furniture, kids could climb up on and fall. Remove all your crystal and breakable knick-knacks, so that none of the little ones could break any of them. And perhaps the most important part of the ‘décor’ would be to have loads of tissue paper and wet wipes, all around the place. You never know who might need one, when!

For the Foodies!

One of the most important part of any party would be the food, especially the cake. But when you are planning a birthday for kids, especially the very first one that your kid has, you want everything to be extra special. The cake will obviously become the centre of all the attention, which is why you would want it to be unique and one of a kind.

How about recreating your baby’s birth certificate on the cake? Or you could have the picture of the day your baby was born, transported onto the cake. It would also be a great idea to have baby things on a cake – rattlers, teething rings, soft toys and even your baby’s favourite blanket!

Once that is decided, you need to move onto what kind of food you intend to serve at the party. This is actually a decision that you will have to base on the age group of the invitees. If you are inviting just kids, your menu needs to be in accordance. However, if there are going to be adults, like parents or other chaperones, you will have to include something that they will enjoy.

Sandwiches, mini pizzas, cookies, chips, French fries, chocolate brownies, muffins and cupcakes all make for ideal party food items, and these are things that both kids and adults will enjoy. You might want to avoid things that could prove a choking hazard. Hard candies, grapes, cherries, nuts like almonds, peanuts and cashews could all prove dangerous, which is why you ought to steer clear. However, stock up on fruit juices, chocolate or strawberry milkshakes, and most definitely water. These are things that both adults as well as kids will need.

Return The Gesture

When so many people are going to turn up to wish and bless your angel, it is only just right that you return the gesture. There are a lot of things that you can choose as party favours, and some of these include small soft toys, hardboard books, bath toys and accessories, rattles, soft sweets, like chocolate, feeding accessories, such as plates, spoons, cups and sipper bottles.

There are certain other party favours, which need a little more effort, but make for truly memorable keepsakes. You could click a photo of the birthday baby with every guest and then put them into small frames, before sending them off to the respective guests, with a note of thank you.

Alternatively, you could have hand prints of each kid, either in paint or in clay, which can again be framed and sent off, post party, with a thank you card attached to it. The first birthday party of your kid will always be a special day, but it might not be the easiest!

You need to make sure that you take all the necessary precautions and make all the arrangements to make your guests (of all sizes) comfortable and happy. Have plenty of disposable cups, plates and spoons for the food, wet wipes and tissue papers, diapers for the little guests. Make sure that you have a room kept aside for mothers who will be arriving with young children, as they might need a quiet place to feed.

In addition, ensure that your birthday baby is well rested before the party, because you really wouldn’t want a cranky guest of honour! Most of all, make sure that you, your baby and all the guests have a blast. And don’t forget to click every single moment of the evening, because these will become memories that will last a lifetime!
