How To Make Your Own Wedding Boutonniere

By on August 23, 2011

How To Make Your Own Wedding BoutonniereEven in this age of people being extremely dependent on professional wedding planners and wedding organizers, there are a lot of things that one likes to do on his/her own. These may be the smallest or tiniest of nitty-gritty things such as making one’s own wedding boutonniere, but to the bride it always matters a lot. And as they say, never mess with the bride!

So when the bride says that she wants a customized or personalized wedding boutonniere made for her groom or the best man, then you give her tips and suggestions, rather than asking her to get the job done from a professional! Here are some simple tips that will help one to be able to make a beautiful looking boutonniere, very easily at home:

Decide On The Flowers

If you are making so much effort to make the boutonniere yourself, then you might as well just spend some time thinking and planning what best you can make out of it by giving it a special touch of customization and personalization. Decide whether you want roses or carnations or Stephanotis flowers. One can even think of going for Orchids, if the wedding is themed in a Hawaiian fashion.

Selecting the perfect flowers really depends a lot on your wedding theme, what color code you are following on the wedding for the guests and the decorations, and what feel you want to create. Once the flowers are selected, you can choose to make a single flower boutonniere, a double flower boutonniere or a triple flower boutonniere, depending on the size of the flowers and your personal tastes and preferences.

Selecting Appropriate Greenery And Other Decorations

Just having a flower on your formal suit or tuxedo makes no sense, as it does not look realistic and attractive. It is important to get the right kind of leaves to keep as a base for the flowers. Some people also like to have a small silk or satin ribbon bow below the boutonniere, so one can get ribbons coordinated with the wedding theme color or the bride’s dress etc. If bling is your style, getting some sparkle or embellishments can also turn out to be good.

Making It Right

Getting the right flowers, greenery and decorations will be of no use until and unless you actually know how to make the boutonniere properly. You should start off by cutting the stem of the flowers to about 3 inches. If you have selected flowers that do not have a good stem, then you can choose floral wire to make one and give support to the flowers. Cover the stem with floral tape by spiraling it around.

Keep the leaves as a base and angle them properly to ensure that they are not coming out too much from the edges of the flowers. If there are two or three flowers, keep the bloom nice and puffy, by angling the flowers well. Tie the leaves or the greenery to the stem with floral tape and use embellishments and ribbons to decorate the boutonniere. You should use boutonniere pins running parallel to the stem to stick it properly on the clothes. Be careful to not make the pins visible, as that can make the boutonniere look very shabby.

Use your creativity, and with a little trial and error, you will be able to get the perfect wedding boutonniere made very soon.
