What is the Broom for?

The ‘jumping the broom’ tradition is very old, and is deeply rooted in the history of Americans and Africans both. While some research scholars have said that the woman jumping over the broom at her wedding reception symbolizes that she is now going to be committed to cleaning the courtyard of the household she is entering, others say that it is meant to be a sign of legal marriage and bonding between the couple.

Many people are also of the opinion that jumping over the broom signifies acceptance of new beginnings. It also puts the couple in a deep bond with their ancestors, who bless them on this day. It is to say that they know and value their roots, and promise to pass on their traditions and values to the next generation as well.

How is It Done?

There is either one broom, or more brooms placed on the floor, at the wedding reception venue. The couple hops or jumps over these brooms as they enter the venue. Some couples may want to do this at the wedding venue, immediately after the vows.

Again, the number of brooms could be different in each culture and region. Like most traditional practices, people have their own versions of this one too, with respective beliefs and meanings.

Making the Broom

One can either get readymade wedding brooms in the market, or could make one at home. Making the brooms is actually quite simple, and also gives one scope for personalization and customization.

First, you’ll need regular brooms picked up from your nearby household supplies store. You can choose the size on your own, depending on how you want the final output to look like. In some traditions, it is believed that the broom handle signifies God holding us, while the flare signifies scattered humans like us.

Once you have the brooms, you need to get decorations and accessories, such as ribbons, flowers, bells, other ornamental decorations etc. Make sure you buy the necessary stationery such as glue, tape etc. at the same time as your decorations, so that you can save multiple trips.

Try out different kinds of arrangements of the decorations on the broom. You can choose to get decorations in colors that match your wedding theme. You could also get creative and attach feathers, stars, imitation precious stones etc. on the broom to make it look more attractive. One can also have the couple’s name written on the broom handle.

If you want to make your guests feel a part of the ceremony, you could have additional bows at the venue, and can ask the guests to stick one each to the broom and contribute towards the ceremony.
