How To Make Pumpkin Candle Holders
In a few months it will be Halloween. So, it is better to be prepared beforehand rather than waiting for the last minute.
Since there are no other major celebrations in sight, children must be already busy planning for their Halloween costume and the events.
One important thing that is more than a part of Halloween is carved pumpkin Jack-O’-Lanterns or the candle holders that are iconic of the celebration. So it is better to be prepared for making a pumpkin candle holder. If required try out carving one before the actual day arrives.
1. Choosing the Pumpkin
The appearance of the candle holder will depend on the size and shape of the pumpkin. So you should choose the right size. This is very important because the size will depend on the place you want to arrange it and how you will be using it.
There are many sizes to choose from. A large one can be fine for your porch and a small one can be easy to carry. But a medium one is always preferred because it can give you the details while allowing you to place it where you wish.
Now choose the shape. It will depend on how you are going to carve it. If you are using a stencil, then look for a pumpkin that is suitable for the design. The surface of the pumpkin should be plain and free of bumps and marks.
The color should be a uniform orange. This will mean that the pumpkin is fully ripe. Also find out is the pumpkin sitting stable. If it tumbles, you will not be able to make it into a candle holder.
Just buying does not finish the job. It ends with bringing it home safely without compromising on the appearance that you so painstakingly paid attention to while buying. A bruised and dented pumpkin not only looks bad but also reduces the life of the candle holder.
2. Carving The Pumpkin
This is the part that actually creates the candle holder. Draw a large circle around the stem and cut along the circle. Retain the top as this will later make the top of the candle holder. Make sure that the hole is big enough to allow you to scoop out the pulp and seeds.
Take a large spoon and scrape out the seeds and pulp from the inside of the pumpkin. Hold the spoon by its bowl. This will give you extra support. Now once the inside is cleaned take a felt tip pen and draw a pattern on the outer surface of the pumpkin. Take a pumpkin carving tool or a very sharp knife and cut along the pattern.
Push the cut pieces from inside and discard them. Sometimes people use stencils for the job. Make sure that the pattern or the face of jack-o-lantern does not have very small features. This makes carving difficult.
3. Putting The Candle In
This is the final stage in making the candle holder. It is best to put in a votive candle inside the holder. It gives the eerie glow that is associated with Halloween. Now put it out in the porch, garden or put a small one in one corner of the living room.
