It symbolized wealth, royalty and culture as sugar at that time was an extremely expensive item and could be afforded by the rich only. But with time the price of this commodity became a common expenditure met by the general public, the custom of giving out gifts was also embraced by the middle classes.

As the bonbonnieres became more affordable they were replaced by almonds. Which were distributes as signification of well wishes to the wedding guests. The fourteenth century saw the rise of the confetti which was nothing but sugar coated and much better presented almonds. At this time Jordan almonds were wrapped and presented to guests in elegant boxes signifying wealth, fertility, happiness, health and longevity to the couple. The bitter taste of the almonds and sweet sugar coating were symbolic of the relationship shared by husband and wife.

In the 21st century such gifts are commonly given to the guests as weeding favors. They have become integral to the wedding procedures in Canada and the rest of United States. These usually vary with theme of the wedding and even the season. The wedding favors may vary from sugar-coated almonds to chocolates or candles or even CDs containing music or photo frames etc. It has become a part of the wedding etiquette to give such thank you tokens to guests. Most of these favors can be purchased from any bridal store and online sites too. One can even make one’s own wedding favor.

One must always choose gifts which can be utilized and put to use by the guests. Instead of gifting a chocolate or almonds which can simply be eaten and forgotten it is advised to gift things which can be kept and preserved for years.
