However, at the back of your mind, the most prominent thoughts is – what about the menu? You know very well that at the end of the day, the success or failure of a party depends on what you serve to the little guests. Food comes foremost and even though you might be serving the same to kids, you can be sure that they will turn out to be pretty tough critics.

This is one of the reasons why, when you are chalking out the menu for a kiddie birthday party, you need to pay an immense amount of attention. Gone are the days when just the cake and a few nibbles would make the kids happy. Children today are turning into food connoisseurs and they want to make sure that what they are getting, is nothing but the best!

Pizza or Sandwich

The best thing about a pizza or a sandwich is that you can get most of the essential food groups in one dish. You have some form of bread, some amount of vegetables and then almost certainly cheese. And the most wonderful part is the fact that almost all kids love these things! The cherry on the icing is that you can get truly creative with both these – change the base, change the toppings, and you will have something the kiddies will surely enjoy.

For the topping you can always bank on favourites like pepperoni and chicken, but you can also experiment with other things that you know kids might not eat in the regular course of things. Think on the lines of finely chopped broccoli or spinach, top it with feta or goat’s cheese; the kids will wolf it down, without a second thought.

You can choose from a variety of such veggies and meats, including, olives, pumpkin, mushrooms, bell peppers, ham, sausages, turkey, prosciutto and ground beef. If you want to do something a little different, while sticking to pizza, you could try rolling up the stuffing inside pizza dough and then baking the same.

These stuffed pizzas are definitely easier for kids to eat, and there will be much less of a mess. Bite size pizzas are also great for birthday parties, because then each kid will feel as if he/she has an individual pizza. For the truly adventurous type, there is also the option of sweet pizza, which you can make by spreading chocolate sauce, and using toppings like apples or bananas.

Coming to sandwiches; just like pizzas, this is another great way to get kids eat all their veggies, which is why you can stuff them with all kinds of healthy treats. While the peanut butter and jelly sandwich might be the biggest hit, how about adding a few slices of apples to the same? Make wrapped sandwiches with a lot of healthy coleslaw in the middle. Veggie burgers, which have patties made with lots of veggies, are another great option.

If you are wondering how to make regular sandwiches more interesting, here are some ideas, which are easy enough to do at home. Use biscuit cutters and cut into sandwiches – chances are that kids will eat more than one! Roll up sandwiches into pinwheels and the roulades will definitely entice the little ones. You could even play with colour, using alternate slices of white and brown breads.

Keep Them Hydrated

Just offering a wide range of food might not be enough, because at the end of the day, kids are going to come running to you, saying that they are thirsty. This is why you need to have a variety of drinks on offer, starting with water; because all said and done, the thirst for water can be quenched only by water.

But just water will not be enough, which is why you might want to consider certain other drinks as well. Don’t hesitate from whipping up some interesting mocktails, especially ones which have loads of fruit in it. Fruit punch, served up in an interesting glass, should capture the attention of the finickiest of kids. Give them a kiddie version of Virgin Mary, using tomato juice, salt and pepper, and watch the kids beam with pleasure.

Smoothies and milkshakes are a great way to get yoghurt, milk and fruits into kids, and these are two things with which you will never run out of options. If the weather is slightly chilly, you could think of offering them hot chocolate with tiny marshmallows, whipped cream and sprinkles. For the summers, what better than lemonade, lemon and lime soda or even pink coloured lemonade, which could be given that rose tint with rose or pomegranate syrup.

Convert any fruit juice into frozen ice candies, and no kid will be able to say no! Add some chopped fruit to a tray of ice, top with a little fizzy water and freeze this. Kids will not want this added to any drink – they will want to pop the same into their mouths, as it is!

And the Main Course is….

If you are not planning on serving pizzas or sandwiches, you will still have a plethora of options left, and these range from pasta salads to banana breads. Chicken will turn out to be your best friend, because you can turn them into nuggets, bake the breasts in the oven, stuff them into wontons or spring rolls, or offer the little guests the all-time favourite of chicken wings!

Eggy delights are aplenty, in the form of devilled eggs, scotch eggs or even a healthy, vegetable filled frittata. Add them to pancake batter or fry them to turn them into fillings for bagels or salted muffins. Offer kids hot dogs and there is no way kids will be able to turn their heads away. Replace regular French fries with sweet potato sticks, and not only do you have something a little different, but also healthier. Even tortilla chips are a good option for the health conscious, because you can serve the same with a healthy dip.

Just because you are serving food at a kiddie party, there is no reason why it all has to be deep fried, because you can entice kids with healthy food too. Offer them sausage rolls or baked fish and chips and chances are that they will gobble these up, with just as much enthusiasm. Even fresh fruits, just in slightly different forms, should win favour with little guests – hide fruits inside a crepe, and cover it with cheese and honey.

Waffles can be laden with strawberries and blueberries, just the way they can be stuffed inside a scone. So you see, a kiddie birthday party need not be just about cakes and other sweet treats – if you set your mind to it, you will be able to come up with several interesting and super healthy options.
