So many patterns, colors, shapes, sugar works, icings and frostings come together to produce a wonderful cake, and a wedding cake is so much more special! I personally feel that the wedding cake should not only look good but also be able to tell you something-if you know what I mean. I have been to many weddings and the only thing that excites me apart from the lovely bridal dresses, is the wonderful and lavishly decorated cakes.
Baking and decorating in today’s world is an art. You think of something, in fact just about anything, and you can turn it into a cake with the available tools and ingredients. The flavor of the cake could be anything ranging from dark chocolate, plain vanilla, coconut cake to more exotic blueberry and cheese, strawberry frangipane or vanilla-almond praline cakes, but the design you mold these delectable cakes into is the most intriguing part.
Let me tell you about some of the cake designs that even you could have at your wedding with a little bit of professional help.
Unique Wedding Cake Designs
Black And White Cake
This is a theme design. The cake that you order can be 2, 3 or 4 tiered and round in shape. The cake has to be covered with white rolled fondant. You may require the help of a professional cake decorator. You have to select a good floral and leaf pattern.
Make sure you have different patterns for different tiers. As the theme is black and white you need to buy some edible black food paint. Ask the decorator to draw the pattern that you have selected on the cake with the black color using a stencil.
Intricate Filigree Cake
This cake shows off loads of hard work and a fondness for perfectness. The cake can be 4, 5 or 6 tiered, square in shape and the size should be diminishing so that the top tier is a cube. Cover each tier with baby pink fondant, you may also choose emerald or turquoise but pink gives it a wedding feel.
You need to select some good patterns for the filigree work. The patterns should be different for each tier. Draw the pattern on sheets of paper, lay a parchment of paper on top of the design and using royal stiff icing in a small tipped icing bag, and slowly trace out the pattern. Dry for about 3 hours. You may need some extra patterns in case there’s a breakage. When the pattern dries up, slowly attach them to your cake using fresh royal stiff icing. Work your way from top to bottom.
Here’s a cake design which will look as pretty as the bride herself. You can use round or square shaped, white fondant covered cake for this one. You may need some help to prepare roses. Now you can make roses with help of chocolate or sugar or fondant.
I have eaten the white chocolate roses colored with red food color and they tasted very good. You can look for other ways to make some big roses and some nice green leaves with something edible. Take white rolled fondant in a rectangular shape and pleat it, lay it gently from top to bottom so that it touches all the tiers of the cake, fix it in place using some icing. Now place the roses and leaves beautifully over the cake.
The Dream House
All newly weds have a dream of a cottage or a nice apartment. Think what you want and ask the designer to make you a house-shaped cake. You may have a garden in the front, flower pot, a small dog and even the bride and groom’s figurines, all edible, as a part of the cake. You may ask the designer to make doors and windows too.
You may also like the classic cakes with the bride and groom on the top. The cake can be coral white or some other light color. Nowadays you get the bride and groom figurines in different positions. The one position liked was where the groom was standing with his bride lifted in his arms. You can try other figure positions too.
Lavender And White Topsy Turvy
This cake is a classic combination of colors. You may make yellow-white, pink-white or lavender-pink combinations. If you have a 4 tiered cake you make 2 white and 2 lavender tiers and arrange them alternately. The cake, however, has to be topsy-turvy shaped to resemble the ups and downs of life. You need a professional baker and decorator to fix the cake. The tiers should be crooked and uneven but fitted so well that they don’t fall but stand a bit bent on one side. Add ribbons and flowers as you like.
