Homemade Birthday Cakes For Kids
Flower Power Birthday Cake
This cake uses a basic butter cake recipe and requires fondant (Wilton’s preferably), flower cutters in different sizes and lots of food coloring. A simple vanilla buttercream frosting would work well with this cake. Bake individual butter cakes in 9-inch round cake tins.
Once they are completely cooled, stack one on top of the other, spreading a thin layer of vanilla frosting in between. Once all the layers are stacked, smooth the remaining frosting on the top and sides of the cake. Add the food coloring to the fondant and punch out lots of flowers. Decorate the top and sides of the cake with the fondant flowers by gently pressing them on the frosting.
LadyBug Birthday Cake
You will need 2 round sponge cakes for this. Keep ready a rich chocolate frosting and a basic vanilla frosting. The cake is shaped like a regular round cake but what makes it special is the ladybug-inspired decoration and topper. Stack the two sponge cakes with a layer of rich chocolate frosting in between.
Mix a teaspoon of red food coloring to half the vanilla frosting. Smooth the top and sides of the cake with the remaining vanilla frosting. Spoon the chocolate frosting and red frosting into two different piping bags. Pipe dots on the top of the cake. Press fondant dots all over the sides and top with a ladybug made out of fondant.
Number Birthday Cake
This is a simple cake to bake and decorate and announces the age of the birthday boy or girl. You will need a cake tin shaped like a number. This chocolate cake gets a zesty makeover with a rich orange frosting made of cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar, orange zest and juice.
Bake a basic chocolate sponge cake in the number shaped tin and smooth the orange frosting evenly on the sides and top. Use a little chocolate ganache in a piping bag to outline the number on the top.
T-Shirt Birthday Cake
You can use any tried and true butter cake recipe. Buy a multi-pack of rolled fondant in primary colors. You will need 3 cakes, two layers for the body of the T-shirt and one small cake for the sleeves. Bake the two layers in rectangular pans and bake the small one in a square pan.
Once the cakes cool completely, smear Chantilly cream on top of one layer and place the second layer on top. Cut the square cake to form two sleeves and place one on either side of the layered rectangular cake. Using a palette knife, smooth Chantilly cream all over the top and sides. Decorate the cake with hearts and diamonds, stamped out from the rolled fondant using shaped cutters.
